Sony Corp. and Kyocera Wireless Corp. on Monday each announced devices based on version 4.1 of the Palm OS.

The Kyocera 7135 is a clamshell smartphone that runs on CDMA2000 1X networks. It features 16MB of on-board memory, a high-resolution screen with 65,000 colors, GPS (global positioning network) technology, and an expansion slot compatible with both MultiMediaCard (MMC) and SD (secure digital) card standards. The phone also includes a built-in MP3 player.

The 7135 also includes a speakerphone, voice-activated dialing, two-way SMS text messaging, Eudora email, and three means of Internet access: HTML, Web Clipping and WAP (wireless application protocol.)

The smartphone has an infrared (IR) data port at the top of the phone, for beaming data to other IR-enabled devices. It does not include the Bluetooth wireless protocol; officials said Bluetooth would have made the device too expensive.

The device is due in the fourth quarter, officials said. Pricing is up to the carriers, but will be in the $500 range.

The Sony PEG-T665C is a PDA with 16MB of internal memory and a lithium ion battery. It also includes a high resolution display, a built-in MP3 player, a Memory Stick expansion slot, a jog-dial navigator, and the ability to act as a remote control.

It costs $399 and is available for order via the Sony Web site.
