JNI Releases Host Bus Adapters for Windows SMBs

JNI Corp. this week said it had completed a new line of speedy host bus adapters that run at 2Gbps and are easier to install and configure. Aimed at small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), JNIs new ZStar series of HBAs are interoperable with Windows servers and storage devices. They are designed to lower the cost and difficulty associated with stitching resources together in Fibre Channel SANs. JNI,acquired August 28 by Applied Micro Circuits for $190 million in cash, makes equipment that connects heterogeneous systems to be part of the same storage area network (SAN).

Veritas, Intel Ink Distribution Deal for Provisioning Software

Veritas Software Corp. today said it had signed an agreement with Intel under which Intel Corp. will offer Veritas server provisioning software as an option for vendors that build blade servers based on Intels Itanium processor. The Veritas OpForce software, which the vendor got with its acquisition of Jareva Technology in December, will ship as Intel Deployment Manager by Veritas OpForce, Veritas executives said. The software automates the configuration and deployment of multiple servers at once, as opposed to traditional manual configuration and deployment of one server at a time, said Troy Toman, senior director of product management for utility computing at Veritas.

StoreAge Upgrades Data Mirroring Solution

StoreAge Networking Technologies Ltd. this week announced upgrades to its network-based multiMirror data mirroring product, which enables data to be continuously replicated from any storage device, to any storage device, at any location. This allows customers to mirror data between their existing storage devices from different vendors, or mirror data to inexpensive storage devices in remote locations, the company said. The product integrates an Fibre Channel IP router, creating instant read-write snapshots of mirrored volumes and optimizing the use of available communication bandwidth.

IDC Reports Storming Storage Sales

An IDC report released this week shows that more than $1.5 billion was spent on storage software worldwide in the second quarter, up 7.3 percent from the previous quarter. The storage replication segment led the sales growth with revenue up 8.5 percent from the first quarter. Software for backing up and archiving data, the largest part of the market, kept pace with the overall markets growth with a 7.3 percent gain. In the second quarter, EMC Corp. consolidated its lead as its share of revenue gained about 1.5 percentage points in the quarter to 24 percent, according to IDC.
