Most solid-state storage drives simply pop right into a system bay and go right to work, storing whatever is piped into it. One disk, any data is the model.

Toshiba America Electronic Components, however, is becoming more customized in this part of the storage business. The Irvine, Calif.-based division of Toshiba Corp. on Jan. 18 launched a new, highly read-intensive enterprise SAS solid-state drive (SSD), the PX04SL series—optimized specifically for read-intensive application workloads.

These use cases include data warehousing, Web servers, media streaming and video-on-demand (VOD). More and more of these applications are now being used in production by a variety of market segments.

As a result, Toshiba said, the PX04SL presents a new type of cost-effective storage package. Available in 2TB and 4TB capacities, the PX04SL enables enterprises to minimize TCO without sacrificing performance, because the unit is both capacious and fast.

With a clocked sustained random-read performance of 270K Input/Output Operations per Second (IOPS), the PX04SL enables read-intensive application workloads to finish their jobs more quickly than most conventional SSDs. To combat bottlenecks, this SAS SSD provides high-density storage for more efficient data throughput, the company said.

The PX04SL Series is available now. For more information on Toshiba’s line of SSDs, hard-disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state hybrid drives (SSHDs), go here.
