Apple Computer Inc. has released a bevy of updates for its AirPort Extreme and Express Wi-Fi base stations that, among other things, improve security.

AirPort 4.1 software is for both Express and Extreme versions, and adds support for Wi-Fi Protected Access for wireless distribution systems. WPA-Personal is the wireless standard approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance to prevent unauthorized access to wireless LANs. The 4.1 software also adds support for Keyspans Express Remote and allows users to rename a USB printer connected to the AirPort Extreme base station.

The firmware updates reinforce the above downloads and improve overall performance, networking with printers, and general ease of future installations.

AirPort Extreme 5.5 focuses on tightening up wireless security, while AirPort Express 6.1 adds improved functionality to AirTunes, as well as security and performance updates.

The software and firmware updates are for users running Windows 2000 or XP or Mac OS X 10.3 or later. OS X users can automatically download the updates through Software Update or from the Apple Web site.
