Apple on March 3 announced upgrades to its AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi Base Station and Time Capsule wireless hard drive, as part of a big day of rollouts that also saw it issue a handful of new Macs.
The AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule will now include dual-band Wi-Fi broadcasting on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. In addition, the devices feature a Guest Network feature that lets users create a secondary network accessible only via the Internet, without needing to give guests a Wi-Fi password.
Time Capsule will retail for $299 for the 500GB model, and $499 for the 1TB model.
The AirPort Extreme will retail for $179.
Earlier on March 3, Apple also announced the rollout of a new Mac Pro that featured the Intel “Nehalem” Xeon processor, as well as updates to its iMac and Mac mini desktop lines.
Additions to the latter include a 24-inch iMac and a Mac mini with Nvidia GeForce 9400M integrated graphics.
Anticipation for the new Apple products rocketed to high levels over the past few days, with Web sites even displaying a photo of a giant wooden box that, it was heavily hinted, contained the new Mac Pro. None of these sites or blogs, however, broke Apple’s information embargo for fear of the company’s real-or-imagined wrath.
