Apple Computer announced July 5 that it will offer a new 17-inch iMac for $899, which will replace the older eMac model.
The iMac, which will feature a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor, a video camera and the iLife 06 software suite, will be marketed toward students and teachers, according to the company.
With a two-inch-thick display, the new iMac is designed to take up less room on desks and other cramped areas. It also uses less energy than older models, the company said in a release.
In its promotion of the iMac, Apple intends to show that the new computer can be a one-stop shop for students and teachers who want to research and present ideas either for individual reports or for large audiences.
In addition to the 17-inch wide-screen LCD, the iMac includes a combo drive for burning CDs and reading DVDs; 512MB of 667MHz DDR2 (double data rate 2) SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM), expandable up to 2GB; and hard drive storage capacity up to 160GB.
All the new iMacs also include a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing out-of-the-box using Apples iChat AV, or recording a video podcast or iMovie using iLife 06.

Since the new iMac replaces the eMac, the older computer will no longer be produced but still can be purchased through the Apple Store.
