Former Vice President Al Gore is the newest member of Apple Computer Inc.s board of directors.

The members elected Gore to the board on Wednesday.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a prepared statement that Gore “brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and wisdom to Apple from having run the largest organization in the world—the United States government—as a congressman, senator and our 45th vice president.”

Jobs also pointed out that Gore is a Mac user who does his own video editing in Final Cut Pro.

“Steve and his team have done an incredible job making Apple once again the very best in the world,” Gore, who also is a senior adviser to Google Inc., said in a statement.

He said he is impressed with Apples Mac OS X operating system and the Cupertino, Calif., companys commitment to open source.

Gore created a reputation as a proponent of technology and the Internet, having popularized the term “information highway.”
