Mac programmers attending Apple Computer Inc.s recent Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco found a special treat tucked into their knapsacks: A preview copy of Mac OS X 10.4, aka “Tiger.”

The forthcoming client and server versions OS X offer plenty of changes under the hood, as well as many noticeable tweaks to the interface, especially with its integration of search.

At the conference keynote, CEO Steve Jobs pointed to the many large printed banners, with slogans teasing Windows developers, such as “Redmond, start your photocopiers.” Apple said will be released to end-users in the first half of 2005, perhaps a year before Windows customers receive the next generation of Windows, called Longhorn.

For a closer look at some of the changes due in Apples OS X 10.4, take a look at eWEEK.coms Tiger slideshow. There you will find features such as the Spotlight search interface; the controls for VoiceOver, OS Xs new spoken interface for visually-impaired users; Dashboard, the holder for new “Widget” productivity apps; the updated iChat conferencing program; and the extended integration of .Mac synchronization.
