Macintosh users waiting for the release of Microsoft Corp.s Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 will have to wait until early October.

Thats when the software maker said the update of its Windows emulation program will be available, following a series of delays. The timing is tied to the release of Service Pack 2 of Windows XP, now set for August after being pushed back.

“We are waiting for the release of Windows XP SP2 in order to offer the most recent, most secure version of Windows XP to our Virtual PC for Mac customers,” Microsoft said in a statement this week.

Virtual PC 7 will be available as part of the Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Professional edition, also coming out in October. Microsoft previously had said both would be pushed back to the fall during its launch of the new Mac Office 2004.

Microsoft will follow the release of the Windows XP-supported version of Virtual PC 7 with an edition for Windows 2000 and for those with previous Windows licenses or wanting to upgrade a few months later.

Microsoft gained the Windows emulation software as part of its 2003 purchase of Connectix Corp.
