BroadSoft is bolstering its unified communications capabilities through the acquisition of Leonid Systems, a longtime partner that has developed a Web portal for telecommunications service providers that run BroadSoft’s BroadWorks voice platform.

BroadSoft officials announced the deal Jan. 12. No financial details were released.

The company over the past several years has been expanding it unified communications (UC) portfolio, including the launch more than two years ago of the UC-One platform—which makes voice, video, instant messaging, presence and other UC features available via a single interface—for service providers. In 2013, BroadSoft introduced BroadWorks Collaborate, which is designed to enable providers to make the services available through server software run within the provider’s own network.

BroadWorks Collaborate is a complement to BroadSoft’s BroadCloud hosted platform. Officials also made it possible for service providers to offer greater security in their bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies by enabling end users to separate business and personal voice and UC services on their mobile devices.

Leonid, a voice-over-IP (VOIP) solutions provider, has built a Web portal for BroadWorks users that enables enterprise IT administrators and customers to more easily configure and manage their BroadWorks-based hosted UC services, according to BroadSoft officials. The portal improves the overall performance of the UC-One application by improving business collaboration and productivity. Communications services like instant messaging and presence, as well as voice and video calling, can be accessed through a single interface from any device, including desktop and notebook PCs, tablets and smartphones.

Such trends as an increasingly mobile workforce, BYOD and cloud computing are putting greater demands on businesses and service providers to make it easier for workers to communicate at any time, from anywhere, and on any device. Leonid’s Web portal technology makes that possible, according to BroadSoft CEO Michael Tessler.

“BroadSoft recently unveiled a new corporate identity built around enhancing the user experience at each phase of the unified communications customer lifecycle—from up-front service messaging to the sales and service implementation process to service adoption and usage,” Tessler said in a statement. “As service providers increasingly demand a superior front-end UC services experience that is intuitive and modern, we recognized that Leonid had the expertise and experience to help BroadSoft better meet the evolving service delivery needs of our customers.”
