A couple of forward-thinking IT companies, disaster recovery/data protection provider Acronis and management software maker SolarWinds, have joined forces on a new project.

The collaboration has resulted in a new VMware vSphere management package that unites backup and recovery in a single package. Naturally, the two companies add the descriptors “easy-to-use and affordable,” although those terms are so relative to reality that they most often are rendered pointless.

However, there actually may be some reality in this case. When purchased together, Acronis vmProtect and SolarWinds Virtualization Manager become available at a discounted price for channel partners registered with the Acronis Global Partner Program. Thus, hopefully, those discounts can be relayed down the food chain to actual customers.

Acronis vmProtect, with its web-based interface, integrates directly into VMware vCenter, enabling administrators to use one console remotely to manage all their tasks. With advanced replication capability with failover and failback — and the handy ability to run a virtual machine directly from its backup — recovery times generally are improved.

In the event of total server failure, bare metal recovery allows an entire machine to be recovered to dissimilar hardware, reducing downtime.

SolarWinds’ Virtualization Manager is a comprehensive management software package that provides visibility into the virtual environment and the physical resources it depends on through unified performance monitoring, capacity planning, VM sprawl control, configuration management, and chargeback automation across an entire VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V infrastructure.

The new package is available at $999 per socket to registered partners.
