Online storage provider Carbonite on Jan. 22 launched an application that covers the iPhone-to-PC backup gap.

Carbonite’s new offering is an extension of its remote access feature, in which a user can access backed-up files on a computer at home or office through a mobile device — and now through an iPhone or iPod Touch.

This approach is different from that of other vendors that offer backup for various singular objectives, such as for address books and calendars.

Features of the Carbonite app include:

  • Browse: Users can browse all backed-up files they have in a Carbonite account.
  • View: Files of all types, including PDFs, images, audio and video files, Excel files, and Word documents, can be viewed anywhere at any time.
  • Share: Users can attach a file to an e-mail with a single tap. Once uploaded and attached, the file can be edited using the iPhone or iPod Touch interface.

Thus, iPhone and iTouch users can back up photos, music, documents and other files using an encrypted system and the company’s secure servers. Once the initial data upload is complete, users can recover and restore files using the Carbonite Restore Wizard (including remote access from other computers) or the iPhone app.

The new app is free to install for current Carbonite users and is available at the iTunes App Store. Carbonite Online Backup is currently available for $54.95 per year.

For new customers, a free 15-day trial of Carbonite is available here.
