Any time a company proves it can save seven figures’ worth of cash for a client, that’s good news. According to the city of Minneapolis, Unisys’ data center outsourcing service has saved it $18 million—and improved its services to taxpayers—over the last five years. Now those are serious bucks.
Minneapolis used to run its own data centers, as many large cities do. But five years ago, the city decided to outsource all this to Unisys, which has managed the city’s entire IT infrastructure—including servers, storage and networking to mobile PCs in police cars—since that time.
Unisys provides IT management and support services for approximately 4,500 city employees, fielding an average of 1,600 service desk calls and 160 equipment installs, moves, adds and changes (IMACs) per month. The company manages more than 210 server computers and 4,400 e-mail boxes for the city, along with more than 330 network devices, 3,650 desktop devices and 1,100 printers.
OK, it does put some IT folks out of work. But it’s hard to argue with those bottom-line results in this economy.
