Michael “Vizionary” Vizard, one of my most esteemed colleagues here at eWEEK, has a good blogster today on Cleversafe that we’d recommend for a quick, enlightened read.

Cleversafe is a Chicago-based, open-source storage software provider that comes at the storage area-network idea from a very different angle. Here’s how their “dispersed-storage” process works.

As Michael explains, Cleversafe basically breaks up all the data and distributes it across multiple storage arrays. Rather than storing a file on one server and then replicating it across the network, Cleversafe cleverly slices the file up across multiple storage devices, using a home-grown approach it calls an Information Dispersal Algorithm.

Last June, we picked Cleversafe as one of three finalists for eWEEK’s Excellence Awards VIII Storage Software category, along with CommVault’s Simpana and Symantec’s Enterprise Vault.

Talk about a rookie breaking into the starting lineup with a couple of grizzled veterans!

As someone once said: “Innovation usually happens elsewhere. You just need to know what to do with it.” Chew on that one for awhile.
