Entry-level and midrange storage systems maker Dot Hill Systems announced Sept. 21 that its Virtual RAID Adapter software is now available for AMD’s newest core logic chip set.
The VRA-for-motherboard solution is based on AMD’s SP5100 southbridge chip set and Dot Hill’s new VRA technology for enterprise servers, using Dot Hill RAIDCore. VRAs replace traditional ROMB (RAID-on-motherboard) solutions with server-class data protection for internal storage that rivals that of more expensive add-in-card-based RAID controllers.
Dot Hill claims that in eliminating the need for such controllers along with their requisite power, cooling and support costs, VRAs allow businesses to lower server storage costs while providing the performance to power transaction-intensive applications.
Dot Hill will offer a basic RAIDCore driver and management solution for Windows and Linux as part of its server reference designs to OEMs, ODMs and motherboard manufacturers that use the SP5100 core logic chip set, Andy Mills, Dot Hill vice president of marketing and business development, told The Station. This will enable support for high performance RAID protection for disk drives inside AMD chip-set-based servers, he said.
