EMC, the 8,000-pound gorilla of the independent storage providers, has added a new feature to its catalog that clears up I/O bottlenecks within storage systems.

The Hopkinton, Mass.-based corporation has licensed next-generation software from storage optimization provider Aspera that enables digital assets to move through its pipes at improved speeds.

Emeryville, Calif.-based Aspera’s core transfer client, server and management software is now available through EMC Select, a channel-based program that enables EMC customers to acquire new components for their data centers.

Aspera enables the following data-moving applications to work optimally at global distances over commodity IP networks: file transfer to, from and between cloud computing nodes, data collaboration and sharing, high-performance computing, user access to centralized storage, FTP replacement, data management, migration, synchronization, replication, and disaster/recovery.

At the core of Aspera’s package is the patented fasp (yes, it’s lowercase) protocol, which delivers full-bandwidth utilization — regardless of transfer distance and network conditions. It also offers policy-based bandwidth control.

Aspera is now available for use in EMC’s Celerra, CLARiiON, and Symmetrix enterprise storage systems.
