Seagate Technology apparently changed its mind Jan. 21 on a firmware fix for its Barracuda 7200.11 hard drive that The Station announced here last Friday.

The embattled disk drive maker, which announced 800 layoffs plus the resignation of CEO Bill Watkins on Jan. 12, rescinded the patch after it reportedly caused 500GB versions of the drive to simply stop working.

Seagate promised to have a fixed fix by EOB Jan. 22. Seagate had said in Friday’s announcement that Barracuda owners “shouldn’t lose any of their data” as a result of the problems; it also promised to provide recovery services at no charge “if necessary.”

Of course, this means that Seagate is admitting it is possible to lose data as a result of all these firmware shenanigans. Whatever.
