Synology, whose name sounds more like an advertising display company than a network storage provider, on Dec. 21 launched a new addition to its DiskStation product line.
The Taiwan-based company’s new DS211+ desktop unit (it’s a tad smaller than a common two-slice toaster) is designed for budget-conscious users at $400 and is quite useful for business and/or personal use.
The unit — black in color — features two hot-swappable drive bays that can run the soon-to-come 3TB drives from makers such as Seagate, WD and others. The DS211+ can take up to 6TB of storage, depending up whether the user wants to deploy a RAID configuration.
The machine comes with Synology‘s DiskStation Manager software, which automatically backs up data on a PC. It doesn’t matter if the PC uses a Windows, Mac OS or Linux operating system.
The DS211+ enables users to access their files wirelessly via their own network or through IP. Lastly, it features an SD card slot for direct import of photos and support for streaming media to UPnP enabled devices.
