Redmond, Wash.-based Synology America, a rising supplier of next-generation network-attached storage products for consumers and small-to-medium-sized businesses, on Jan. 20 began shipping a fast new five-bay NAS array with a lot of enterprise-type features.
The DiskStation DS1010+ is designed for smaller businesses with growing storage needs — in other words, all SMBs — who seek an alternative to a standard PC file server in order to centralize data backups, protect critical assets, and share files remotely. It can expand to up to 10 bays and 20TB of storage, if needed.
But the speed in this machine is what Synology likes to highlight.
“The DS1010+ serves an average of 116+ MB/sec reading speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and 103+ MB/sec writing,” said Synology President Cheen Liao. “The Web server responsiveness rate is remarkable, taking only 30.81 seconds to handle 1,000 simultaneous requests.”
Liao said that the DS1010+ can cost-effectively replace several PC file servers or other storage devices on the network and smoothly integrate into existing cross-platform environments.
The DS1010+ can expand its capacity horizontally from 5 bays to 10 bays using the DX510 Expansion Enclosure — a separate purchase.
Features also include cross-platform data sharing, RAID and auto-notification, Windows ADS support, network and remote backup [including Apple Time Machine support], file sharing and encrypted FTP, mail and Web server, DLNA media server and photo sharing, iSCSI target support, a surveillance station with support for up to 20 IP cameras on the network, and a Web-based interface with mobile phone and two iPhone/iPod applications.
Whew. That’s one busy storage system.
DiskStations are also power-aware. They consume a mere 68 watts of power under normal operating conditions, support Wake-on-Lan, and hibernate disks when not in use to further reduce energy consumption. Most conventional arrays use twice that much power.
The DS1010+ has hot-swappable drives, is powered by the Intel Atom dual-core D510 processors, and has two Gigabit LAN ports, four USB ports and 1GB DDRII RAM. RAM capacity can be scaled up to 2GB or 3GB.
