IBM is launching a mastery exam to help DBAs identify and resolve thorny issues, the company will announce on Tuesday.

The new DB2 Problem Determination Mastery Exam is designed to give database administrators the skills to investigate and isolate database issues such as the implementation of workarounds or fixes; to deal with common installation issues such as upgrades, instance creation and license management; to identify the source of communication problems in a client/server environment; to use DB2s problem-determining tools and to interpret the results to prevent problem reoccurrence; and to flag application development errors and analyze information stored in database and operating system logs.

According to officials at IBM, in Somers, N.Y., DBAs who pass the exam will be equipped to resolve up to 75 percent of common database problems. For free study materials, DBAs can go to IBMs DB2 Technical Support site.

IBM recommends that test takers first attain the IBM Certified Database administrator Certification before attempting to take the exam. The DB2 Problem Determination Master Exam takes 1 hour to complete, costs $40 and will be available on Tuesday.

In related news, IBM is beefing up its Mobile Academy—a program of on-site training—to include DB2 Content Manager training. The training will focus on 8.2, the latest version of Content Manager.
