Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said at a recent conference that the only reasonable building block for enterprise computing is the hardware on which hed like to see us put the companys latest release, Oracle 10g. Thats because, Ellison said, the inexpensive commodity hardware required by 10g—a twin-processor Lintel server for USD5000, for example—is a setup thats faster and almost 10 times cheaper than a similar mainframe or Unix setup.

The labor costs in managing these systems have historically outweighed the hardware savings. Oracle hopes to change that equation by automating everything possible in 10g.
