Oracle has released a new in-memory relational database designed to meet the faster response time needs of enterprises.
Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database Release 7 is the first major version of the TimesTen database developed internally by Oracle since the company purchased TimesTen, a startup firm that specialized in data management, in 2005. The new release supports familiar Oracle Database 10g data types, in-memory data caching and dozens of languages and database character sets, Oracle officials said.

“The tight integration between Oracle TimesTen for real-time data management in the middle tier and the Oracle Database for enterprise-wide data management is unique in the industry,” said Jim Groff, Oracles senior vice president, in a statement. “It delivers outstanding support for real-time business functions today, and an architecture to meet the data management demands for future Service Oriented Architectures.”
Oracle TimesTen is aimed at a variety of industries, especially financial services, telecommunications and defense, where real-time applications are essential to business success, company officials said. It includes several key features to help customers capture, access and manage information faster as well as enhanced SQL functionality, automatic data aging and on-demand data loading. When used as a cache, data in Oracle TimesTen 7 can be loaded and automatically aged out of memory, Oracle officials said.
Oracle TimesTen 7 delivers dynamic database caching of Oracle Databases for enterprise applications such as customer relationship management and customer self-service. For example, call centers using TimesTen can offer instant access to information and the ability to quickly address customer questions, company officials said.

Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database is generally available starting at $12,000 per computer, depending on the size of the in-memory database.
