Competition is getting fierce in the in-memory database business, with companies such as SAP, Oracle, ScaleOut, Birst, SAS, Terracotta and Sweden’s Starcounter all coming out with new products in the last 12 months.

Open source-based Terracotta made news March 4 by launching an updated version of its flagship BigMemory data management engine and introducing a new, more scalable business-intelligence software platform for big data workloads.

The San Francisco-based company made the announcement in Hannover, Germany, at the annual CeBIT conference, the world’s largest IT device trade show.

Using BigMemory 4.0, enterprises can move as many as hundreds of terabytes of high-value data from slow hard drives to machine memory for substantially faster user access—and speed is what it’s all about these days.

Terracotta claims that BigMemory 4.0 also has enterprise-grade levels of reliability and flexibility that were previously available only in traditional, disk-based data management systems.
The Terracotta BigMemory 4.0 features improved functionality that includes Java 7 support, more complete monitoring and management of in-memory data, high availability and fast restart for disaster recovery. The upgrade also adds compatibility with Hadoop, allowing enterprises to glean and share Big Data insights at in-memory speed.

Finally, the new edition also includes a free production version of BigMemory Max for distributed in-memory data management, Terracotta said.

BigMemory 4.0, available now as a stand-alone system, also will power In-Genius, Terracotta’s upcoming native in-memory platform for intelligent action on big data workloads.

In-Genius will deliver real-time insights from any source of dynamic data to any delivery channel—including Web, mobile and point-of-sale—for immediate action, Terracotta said.

BigMemory 4.0 also will be the in-memory data platform for WebMethods 9.0 from Software AG, introduced March 4 at CeBIT.

A free production version of BigMemory 4.0 is available now for download at terracotta.org, in addition to a free 30-day trial of the BigMemory 4.0 full version.
