Former Macromedia Chief Technology Officer Jeremy Allaire has landed at General Catalyst Partners, a venture capital firm.

Allaire joins the Cambridge, Mass., company as a technologist in residence, company officials said.

In his new role, Allaire will help the firm identify investment opportunities in the enterprise software and Web application areas, as well as work with General Catalyst Partners existing clients on their product efforts, the company said.

The firms portfolio of companies includes Avaki Corp., IMlogic Inc., Imprivata Inc., Laszlo Systems Inc., m-Qube Inc., Narad Networks Inc., National Leisure Group Inc., OutStart Inc., ProfitLogic Inc., Recruitsoft Inc., SmartBargains Inc. and Upromise Inc.

Other recent additions to General Catalyst Partners include Larry Bohn, former CEO of NetGenesis Corp., as venture partner; and David Grain, formerly senior executive in charge of AT&T Corp.s Broadband division for the New England region, as entrepreneur in residence.

Allaire announced his intent to leave San Francisco-based Macromedia two weeks ago on his Web log. He joined Macromedia two years ago when it acquired Allaire Corp., which he co-founded in 1995, and helped develop the popular ColdFusion application development platform. At Allaire Corp., Allaire worked with David Orfao, who served as the companys CEO and is now a managing director at General Catalyst Partners.

“Im going to help them find interesting opportunities and then work with their early-stage companies. I have a lot to learn,” Allaire wrote in his Web log.

Allaire said he will remain involved with Macromedia as a founder emeritus.
