Enterprise data integration software maker Ascential Software Corp. announced this morning its intent to acquire Mercator Software Inc. for $106 million, or $3 per share.

The deal will make Ascential, of Westboro, Mass., the largest company focused on enterprise data integration, with annual revenues of more than $250 million and 3,000 customers, officials said.

Mercator provides integration, data transformation and routing software that enables companies to exchange information internally and externally with customers, partners and suppliers. The Wilton, Conn., company also brings to the table a vertical approach, with software focused in the areas of finance, healthcare, retail, manufacturing and distribution.

Mercators top competitors include the likes of IBM, SeeBeyond Technology Corp. and Vitria Technology Inc.

Ascential, for its part, offers its Enterprise Integration Suite for data integration, analysis and management. Its software packages include capabilities for data extraction, transformation and loading as well as data quality management, profiling and analysis.

Under the terms of the agreement, Ascentials tender offer for Mercator is expected to close by the end of this quarter.
