Deal Sealed

Online auction service provider FreeMarkets has signed a two-year pact to provide auction services to Cooper Industries following completion of a successful pilot. Cooper, a $4.5 billion maker of electrical products, tools and hardware, will use FreeMarkets to source goods and services.

Amazons Rules of Usage

Amazon.com has launched a software licensing service that will allow small-business customers to pay for applications by the drink. Rather than requiring companies to purchase software packages outright, Amazon will let them buy a license for each employee who will use the application, a system that it says could save businesses as much as 20 percent.

Altaworks Scores

Altaworks, a Nashua, N.H., start-up that provides software to monitor online transaction systems, has raised $25.8 million in a first round of funding. Participants include Prism Venture Partners, St. Paul Venture Capital and YankeeTek Ventures. The company says the money will be used to expand sales, marketing and customer service.
