Google has updated its Java support for Google App Engine, delivering a new software development kit with fixes and improvements.

Version 1.2.1 of the App Engine SDK for Java is now available. Jason Cooper, a member of Google’s App Engine Team, said this is the first update to Google’s new Java language support and includes a number of bug fixes and feature additions including:

“??Ç Support for unindexed datastore properties of arbitrary types??Ç Embedded UTF-8 characters in JSP (JavaServer Pages) now render correctly??Ç Increase in response size limit from 1MB to 10MB??Ç Support for Thread.setContextLoader()“

“There are a host of updates for the JDO/JPA [Java Data Objects/Java Persistence API] layer as well,” Cooper said.

Google announced support for Java on its App Engine cloud platform in April. When Google initially launched App Engine in April of 2008, the company only provided support for Python development on the cloud solution.
