Mercury Interactive Corp. Monday launched its first product line built to optimize the performance of J2EE applications.
The new Optane for J2EE line spans the full lifecycle of J2EE applications from creation and QA testing into deployment and production, and it is intended to be used by developers as well as operations staff in support of improved application availability, scaleability and performance, according to Yoav Banin, senior product marketing manager at Mercury Interactive in Sunnyvale, Calif.
“The idea is to improve time to problem resolution—to quickly isolate where the problem area is. (Both development and operations staff) have shared views and shared communications to escalate problems,” he said.
J2EE applications are beginning to reach critical mass, and they pose a unique challenge because of the complexity associated with their modular nature. “It is hard to assess the performance of (J2EE application) components in how theyd be integrated, and it is tougher to manage and optimize the applications because they have all these distributed components,” said Banin.
The suite allows users to test single Enterprise Java Beans or servlets as well as complete applications. Large-scale applications can be load tested in the QA stage. The tools also allow users to validate the application infrastructure, tune configurations and assess capacity in the deployment phase. Then business availability, business process performance, application fault management and code diagnostics can be performed in the operations phase of a J2EE application.

Technology shared across the different products in the suite include business process scripts, agent-less monitors and J2EE application instrumentation.
The suite introduces new transaction breakdown technology developed by Mercury Interactive along with the ability to perform “deep J2EE component monitoring” that is leveraged across all of the products and lifecycle phases, according to Banin. The suite also brings in new trace diagnostics functions via Mercury Interactives recent Performant Inc. acquisition.
The suite is made up of Mercury Interactives Quick Tests, LoadRunner, Test Director, ProTune and Topaz monitor. Optane for J2EE is available now.
