Microsoft, Red Hat to Support Intels X-Scale

Call it Wintel and Lintel. Microsoft Corp. and Red Hat Inc. at the Intel Developers Conference in San Francisco this week announced plans to support Intels X-Scale architecture with their embedded operating systems.

Building on its plans to work with Intel on wireless device support, Microsoft officials said the company is optimizing Microsoft CE.Net for devices that run on Intels PXA250 and PXA210 processors.

“Our goal is to have multimedia applications, Web browsers, etc., run faster,” said Scott Horn, director of the embedded appliance and platforms group at Microsoft in Redmond, Wash.

Microsoft officials also said the company is working on an update to CE.Net. Code-named Jameson and due later this year, it will include support for IP Version 6, support for various document views and improved device management, officials said.

Meanwhile, Red Hat at IDF announced that it will provide a development kit for Intels IOP321 I/O processors, which are designed for storage devices.

The Red Hat suite will include developer tools, firmware and the embedded Linux operating system, said Red Hat officials, in Raleigh, NC.
