Desktop configuration management provider ON Technology Corp. has extended the concept of self-service user support to Web-based remote software delivery. The Cambridge, Mass., vendor added a new Web server option to its ON Command product line that allows end users to download and install applications using a Web browser.
The ON iCommand Java-based servlet allows IT operations or management service providers to set up Web servers on their intranets that provide end users with access to optional applications, without having to involve key personnel in the process.
ON iCommand is a free, downloadable Java module that runs on standard Web servers, including Microsoft Corp.s Internet Information Server, Netscape Communications Corp.s Enterprise Server and Apache. ON Command CCM is required, and the company has published the source code to allow users to customize it.
