Homing in on the e-learning market, PeopleSoft Inc. on Wednesday announced the acquisition of Teamscape Corp., a learning management systems provider.

Founded in 1996, Teamscape is a privately held company based in Burlingame, Calif.

PeopleSoft, of Pleasanton, Calif., will combine its Human Capital Management software with Teamscapes products. The integrated solution will be available in the fourth quarter, according to officials.

Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The PeopleSoft Enterprise Learning solution, announced in April, will enable companies to provide targeted learning to employees in the appropriate format – and track and measure learning effectiveness. The software will also allow companies to integrate learning in every aspect of their business.

In a statement, Doug Merritt, vice president and general manger of PeopleSoft Human Capital Management, said “to be successful in todays hyper-competitive markets, organizations are demanding the ability to integrate learning into all of their business processes to drive performance.”

PeopleSoft may not be that far off the mark.

IDC, a market research company in Framingham, Mass., expects the U.S. market for corporate e-learning to more than triple from $4.2 billion in 2001 to $18 billion by 2005.

However, PeopleSoft is likely to face stiff competition from both pure play vendors and integrated software providers such as IBM, which kicked off its e-learning solution Lotus LearningSpace 5.0 a year ago.

LearningSpace is available in two versions, the Core Module, which delivers and tracks self-paced learning sessions, and the Collaboration Module, which adds real-time virtual classrooms.
