Rational Software Corp. on Monday unveiled new features to its 5-month-old Rational Developer Network as a key part of the release of its Rational Release Version 2002 developer suite.

The goal of the upgrades to the developer network is to give developers a single place online to learn new technology, find information, polish current skills and share ideas, said David Locke, director of product marketing for Rational.

“RDN gives people an online development community, with specific, targeted content that varies depending on what their interests are,” Locke said.

The upgraded network, which is available now, includes four new knowledge centers and two new exchanges, where developers can find and exchange information, and new information on such technologies as Microsoft Corp.s .Net and Sun Microsystems Inc.s Java 2 Enterprise Edition, as well as tools from such companies as IBM, BEA Systems Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Prebuilt Developer Accelerators enable developers to build applications more quickly, company officials said.

There also are more discussion forums and greater Web–based training available on the network, which has grown to more than 3,000 developers since going live in June, Rational officials said.

Other features of Rational Release 2002 include upgrades to Rational ProjectConsole—which now includes team Web sites that enable businesses to archive project artifacts and metrics, and metrics from Rational and third-party tools—and to Rational ClearCase, including more integrated developer environment integrations and greater component development.
