Just before Christmas, Red Hat released the latest beta version of its Red Hat Linux distribution, code-named Phoebe.

Phoebe comes packed with all the bleeding-edge packages youd ever want, including a release candidate version of KDE 3.1 and the latest beta version of GNOME 2, as well as a release of Mozilla with support for the font-prettifying Xft built-in.

What really caught my eye, however, was redhat-config-samba, one of the latest additions to Red Hats line of excellent configuration tools. The point of Samba is to make life easier for users looking to share files and network resources with Windows systems, but doing so has traditionally required fiddling with the command line or with crude-looking GUI tools.

As a beta release, Phoebes too rough around the edges for actual deployment, but its certainly worth loading on a spare system. Download it for free from one of Red Hats FTP mirrors listed at redhat.com/download/mirror.html.
