Sun Microsystems Inc. is planning to roll out a 12-processor Unix server, the Sun Fire v1280, powered by the companys 64-bit 900MHz UltraSparc III chip.

The mid-range server, which would come in four- to 12-way configurations, could debut at a Sun event on Feb. 10 in San Francisco. Among those scheduled to speak at the event is Scott McNealy, CEO of the Santa Clara, Calif., company.

According to a Sun Web site in Belgium and Luxembourg, the v1280 will include a four-processor configuration that includes 8GB of memory and an eight-way configuration with 16GB of memory.

There also will be two 12-way systems, one with 24GB of memory and another with 96GB, according to the site.

The v1280 will join two other low-end Unix servers from Sun, the four-processor v480, which features up to 32GB of memory and was released in June 2002, and the eight-way v880, with up to 64GB of memory.

Sun officials declined to comment on the server.
