Borland Buys 2 Software Firms

Borland Software went on a spending spree last week, buying two companies to expand its software offerings.

First, Borland announced it will acquire BoldSoft and its software development technology, which Borland will integrate into its development tool line. Two days later, Borland said it will spend $24 million to buy Starbase. Officials said the purchase brings configuration management software expertise into Borlands product mix and helps to extend its coverage of the application development life cycle.

Museum to Honor 4 Tech Pioneers

The two founders of Adobe systems and two other technology pioneers will be honored by the Computer History Museum next week.

The museum, which houses one of the largest collections of high-tech historical artifacts, will induct Charles Geschke and John Warnock, co-founders of Adobe in 1982, and Carver Mead and the late John Cocke into its Hall of Fellows during a ceremony in San Jose, Calif.

Mead helped create the very-large-scale-integration semiconductor design method, and Cocke developed the RISC chip design method.

Not including the new honorees, the museum, in Mountain View, Calif., has inducted 20 people into the hall since 1987.

Home Depot Inks Deal With HP

The PC industry may no longer be the moneymaker it was a few years ago, but every now and then someone hits it big.

Last week, it was Hewlett-Packard, which got an order from Home Depot for 40,000 computers.

Home Depot will use Compaq Evo D510 PCs in its 1,456 stores nationwide for everything from operations to customer service to employee education. The PCs will be a key part of the companys push to standardize and upgrade its in-store infrastructure. Neither HP nor Home Depot released a financial figure for the deal.
