McLeodUSA provides integrated communications services in a number of Midwest, Southwest, Northwest and Rocky Mountain states, as well as long-distance, advanced data and Internet services in all 50 states. Today, the companys infrastructure includes 396 Asynchronous Transfer Mode switches, 50 voice switches, 1.1 million local lines and 21,622 route miles of fiber-optic network, and serves about 385,300 customers.

In the past year, the company grew both through acquisition and organically, under the guidance of co-CEOs Stephen C. Gray and Clark E. McLeod. In April 2000, McLeodUSA completed its purchase of Splitrock Services, a next-generation data services company. Eight months later it acquired CapRock Communications, a competitive carrier operating in six states. This year, the company bought Intelispan, a provider of virtual private network products and services, which will be managed by McLeodUSA Network Services.

McLeodUSA, which refused interview requests, also is extending its technology infrastructure with a 31,000-route-mile next-generation network.
