At a recent briefing with eWeek Labs, Ciscos Jim Turner, director of marketing, said more sites should take advantage of the equipment makers approach to network management.

“We are using Web technologies, including [Extensible Markup Language] and browser-based access, to make management of Cisco infrastructure less complex and less dependent on the version of the management framework that might be in use,” Turner said.

IT managers who have been using older versions of the companys line of CiscoWorks 2000 infrastructure management software should consider upgrading to the latest version to see if the Web-based edition can reduce management costs.

For example, the new version of CiscoWorks avoids extensive API calls, thereby significantly reducing special coding to make the product work with enterprise management systems.
