The Desktop Management Task Force has released another version of what it hopes will be one of the key building blocks in its slowly evolving network management scheme.

Version 2.5 of the DMTFs CIM (Common Information Model) corrects several shortcomings found in the previous version and adds significant abilities to the specification, including models that recognize Windows ME as well as several new processors such as AMDs Duron and Athlon chips.

Although these advances move CIM forward, it is still likely that the benefits for IT—primarily better network management capabilities—are a year or more away. Its easy to keep tabs on the DMTFs progress by visiting its Web site at www.dmtf.org.
