Acer America Corp. on Wednesday will unveil the TravelMate 800, a lightweight notebook computer that utilizes Intel Corp.s new Centrino chip set.

The two-spindled notebook features a 15-inch screen and a 60-gigabyte removable hard drive as well as a hot-swappable media bay and integrated support for the Bluetooth wireless protocol.

Acer officials said the TravelMate 800 has a battery life of up to 8 hours if customers opt for a dual-battery configuration.

Preloaded with Microsoft Corp.s Windows XP Professional, the TravelMate 800 has a starting price of $1,799.

Intels Centrino chip set includes the Pentium-M chip—formerly known as “Banias”—an accompanying chip set and an 802.11b wireless LAN module. Three versions will be released, with speeds ranging from 900MHz to 1.6GHz. Intel already sells Pentium notebook processors that are primarily enhanced desktop chips that consume less power but hamper battery life. The Pentium-M is designed for notebooks.

Next month, Acer plans to unveil a Tablet PC computer that runs Centrino, officials said.
