Forrester Identifies Key End-of-Year Data Points in IT Business

Forrester Research put out some end-of-the-year data points Dec. 14. eWEEK thought we would share some of them with you.

U.S. tech spending will reach $1.5 trillion in 2018. Forrester predicts that U.S. business and government tech spending will surpass $1.5 trillion in 2018, up nearly 6 percent from 2017. The increase is concentrated in tech staff salaries and benefits, tech outsourcing purchases, software and tech consulting, and systems integration services. The U.S. tech budget will grow faster than nominal GDP in 2018 due to the rising adoption of cloud solutions and an increased use of business technology.

Online ad revenue grew by $10.5 billion YoY in Q3 2017. Forrester analyzed the online advertising revenue generated by 13 key digital media companies, including Google, Facebook and Alibaba, which together constitute more than 75 percent of the online advertising market. According to Forrester data, after remaining in the 23 percent to 26 percent year-over-year growth range for the past six quarters, global online advertising revenue growth broke noticeably upward in Q3 2017, reaching 29.6 percent.

Facebook loses ground among U.S. online youth. Forrester examined Facebook usage among young consumers age 12 to 17 as well as consumer behavior and perspectives on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram and Snapchat. The findings reveal that Facebook is falling behind in popularity as other social media platforms are stealing the spotlight and delivering niche value.

Forrester examined the evolving role of the chief information security officer (CISO) in Fortune 500 companies, which revealed that there is a gender crisis in cybersecurity, a growing number of CISOs having MBAs and how tenure impacts the CISO’s opportunities in Fortune 500 firms.
