HTC Feb. 25 said it would launch the Android 2.2-based HTC Merge handset through several North American carriers as part of its spring smartphone lineup.

The Merge includes a QWERTY slide-out keyboard and 3.8-inch touch-screen display running HTC’s Sense user interface. HTC offers this picture of the device.

The smartphone also integrates with Exchange ActiveSync and supports Flickr for sharing and viewing pictures. Speaking of pictures, the Merge usesa 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash, and captures HD 720p video.

The Merge is HTC’s first CDMA world phone based on Android, providing global 3G roaming, said Jason Mackenzie, president of HTC Americas in a statement.

Phandroid found evidence that the Merge has shown up in Verizon Wireless’ inventory. To that end, the Merge follows in the footsteps of Motorola’s Droid 2 Global, which is fitted with quad-band GSM global roaming to run on both Verizon Wireless’ CDMA and GSM networks.

The Merge isn’t the only Android handset afoot from HTC. Engadget uncovered screen inventory for an HTC Droid Incredible 2 and the HTC Incredible, a world phone available only in the U.S.

These gadgets will join the HTC Thunderbolt, which will be exclusive to Verizon’s 4G LTE network later this year, and the HTC Shift, which Sprint currently offers for $150 with contract.
