Building on an alliance the two companies announced last summer, AT&T Wireless Inc. and Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday announced a wireless application suite for corporate customers.

AT&T Wireless Workware provides access to corporate e-mail and other basic applications behind a companys firewall, from a variety of devices ranging from laptop computers to high-end phones that run Microsofts Pocket PC operating system.

Hewlett Packard Co.s HP Services division will be the systems integrator for the solution, said AT&T officials in Redmond, Wash.

At the same time, AT&T Wireless introduced the Siemens SX56, a smart phone from Siemens AG that runs Pocket PC. It supports GSM/GPRS (global system for mobility/general packet radio service) networks and comes standard with several Microsoft Office applications and a Web browser.

To install additional applications, IT managers can use an over-the-air provisioning system that AT&T and Microsoft developed, officials said.

The device has a retail price of $549.99
