Nokia Corp. on Friday announced plans to restructure its two main business units into four, in an attempt to focus more strongly on mobile phone hardware and software development.

The move follows the reorganization of the Espoo, Finland, companys mobile phone division into nine units in the spring of 2002. The restructuring will be in effect as of January 1, 2004, officials said.

Currently Nokias business units comprise the mobile phone business and the networking business. The new business units are as follows:

Mobile Phones will include mobile phones. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will be executive vice president and general manager of mobile phones.

Networks will still include back-end networking equipment for WANs worldwide. Sari Baldauf will be executive vice president and general manager of networks.

Multimedia will include software for mobile phones, including games, music and video content. Anssi Vanjoki will be executive vice president and general manager of multimedia.

Enterprise Solutions, which the company announced last summer, will focus on corporate customers and the handsets and software that apply specifically to them rather than consumers.

There are also several groups that will run horizontally and globally across the four business units.

Pekka Ala-Pietilä will run sales and marketing as well as manufacturing and logistics, and will keep his current position as president of the company.

Pertti Korhonen, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Nokia, will run the technology management and development unit.

Matti Alahuhta will be executive vice president and chief strategy officer with responsibility for corporate strategy and development, research, venture capital and business infrastructure.

Rick Simonson has been appointed senior vice president and chief financial officer.

Jorma Ollila remains chairman and CEO.
