Research in Motion Ltd. and Cognos Inc. on Monday will announce that Cognos is developing business intelligence software for RIM BlackBerry pagers.

RIM is best known for supplying always-on access to corporate e-mail but has been working for the past year to supply access to other applications as well. Competitors plan this year to supply always-on access to other de-vices via new wireless networks, so RIM needs to partner with more appli-cation companies to gain an edge.

The main fruit of the RIM/Cognos partnership is RIM sup-port for Cognos NoticeCast alerting software, which Cognos plans to dem-onstrate at Spring Comdex in Chicago next week, according to officials at the Burlington, Mass., company.

NoticeCast alerts users about various changes in customer relation-ship management, supply chain activ-ity and financial performance among other things, according to the users specifications.

NoticeCast for the BlackBerry will be available immediately from Cognos, officials said.
