Coyote Point Systems Inc. will play David to Cisco Systems Inc.s Goliath at Interop in New York on Tuesday when it launches its next-generation Web application accelerator platform.
On the heels of Ciscos Application Network Services strategy launch, Coyote will introduce its new Equalizer Extreme II appliance, which can handle up to 100,000 connections per second and supports a range of application front-end functions including advanced SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) acceleration, content compression, bandwidth management, application firewall rule sets and SNMP network management.
A number of different add-on modules for the new hardware platforms allow users to implement server load balancing, application traffic management, SSL acceleration, content compression, bandwidth management and global load balancing. The platform provides throughput of up to 1G bps.

The new hardware platform, designed to compete head to head with F5 Networks Inc.s Big-IP 3400 traffic management systems, is built on Dell Computer Inc.s PowerEdge 1850 rack-mount network server.
Coyote Point Systems, one of the few remaining independent application front-end providers after the past years wave of consolidation, competes on lower cost and ease of installation and use, according to Michael Hayes, president of the San Jose, Calif., company.
“We beat [F5 Networks] on ROI if customers are not looking for cutting edge [technology]. F5 is harder to deploy. Were more plug and play. Our average installation takes a day and does not often require technical support,” Hayes said.

“For their price points this hits small and medium enterprises that arent ready for a Cisco or an F5 but need to have something that can offer similar functionality without breaking the piggy bank,” said Equalizer Extreme I user Jim Chan, director of IS at CaféPress.com in Foster City, Calif.
The new Extreme II can load balance up to 64 virtual clusters. It also performs TCP connection management, HTML optimization and SSL processing offload.
Coyote Point said it intends to add compression capabilities early next year, along with a new SNMP management console. Coyote is also planning to add support for IP Version 6 in July of next year.
The Equalizer Extreme II is available now and starts at $9,999. Fully loaded with optional modules, the appliance is $26,000.
