Networking specialist D-Link announced an addition to its EasySmart line of Gigabit Ethernet smart switches, the DGS-1100-24P twenty-four-port PoE+ switch.

Enclosed in a rugged metal housing and installable in a standard 19-inch rack, the DGS-1100-24P carries a limited lifetime warranty and offers Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) capabilities on the first 12 ports.

“The DGS-1100-24P switch is ‘built-to-last,’ and carries a limited lifetime warranty,” Steven Olen, director of product marketing for business networking at D-Link, told eWEEK. “The metal housing helps it better withstand hazards, occasional accidents or unintentional abuse. The metal housing also helps with thermal dissipation, which is important in a PoE switch as it consumes more overall power than a non-PoE switch.”

The switch begins shipping in January 2015, carries a list price of $389.99 and will be available throughout D-Link’s network of channel partners, including VARs, distributors and online retailers.

In addition, the switch features loopback detection and cable diagnostic troubleshooting tools, which help administrators identify network issues so they can be corrected, and is compliant with IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), consuming less energy by reducing power consumption when traffic volume is low, the company said.

Managed through a browser-based graphical user interface (GUI), all EasySmart switches support L2 switching features such as a 802.1Q VLAN, QoS, bandwidth limiting, link aggregation and Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping.

The EasySmart management interface also provides administrators with a way to monitor and control PoE functions, including displaying real-time PoE power usage and remotely rebooting IP cameras or access points from anywhere on the network, including over the Internet.

“All models within the DGS-1100 Series EasySmart family support an intuitive, easy-to-use GUI for switch configuration and monitoring,” Olen explained. “This makes the EasySmart switch family an ideal solution for small business without a dedicated IT staff.”

Thanks to compliance with the IEEE 802.3at PoE+ standard (up to 30W) and the 100W power budget, which can be allocated across the 12 PoE ports in any manner necessary, the switch simplifies deployments with IP cameras, voice over IP phones, wireless access points and other standards-compliant powered devices.

Auto Surveillance VLAN helps ensure real-time video quality for monitoring and control without compromising the transmission of conventional network data, and network assistant utility allows administrators to discover multiple D-Link Smart Switches within the same L2 network segment.

Finally, bandwidth control means network administrators can reserve bandwidth for important functions that require more bandwidth.

Other features include traffic segmentation (which means when a traffic segmentation forwarding domain is specified, packets received by the port will be restricted in Layer 2 packet forwarding to interfaces within the domain) and storm control (which means when a packet storm has been detected, the switch will drop packets coming into the switch until the storm has subsided).
