Hewlett-Packard Co. Monday is expected to announce a deal to bundle BEA Systems Inc.s WebLogic Application Server with each copy of the HP-UX operating system, sources said.

HP, based in Palo Alto, Calif., will ship WebLogic Application Server 7 with HP-UX11i and will ship WebLogic with the HP OpenView Transaction Analyzer, sources said.

The move follows HPs plans to get out of the middleware business, and appears to be a BEA move to target applications server rival IBM.

BEA officials, in San Jose, Calif., declined to comment, and HP could not be reached.

However, according to an IBM spokesman, “BEA obviously is trying to overcome the fact that IBM has rapidly gained market share and taken industry leadership. IBM has partnerships with 9,000 business partners, including top companies such as JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, SAP, Dessault, Ariba and i2, and they are a major factor in WebSpheres 13 consecutive quarters of double-digit growth.”

Meanwhile, industry sources said HP and IBM are in the midst of working out their own deal to bundle IBMs WebSphere application server and the systems giants DB2 database system on HP servers. The deal would consist of co-selling, marketing and developing joint applications, sources said.
