Telecommunication services company Telecommunication Services Inc. (TSI) is changing its name in order to show that it wants to be more than a telecommunication services company.
On Monday, TSI announced that from here on in the company will be called “Syniverse Technologies,” a name picked from more than 2,200 candidates.
“We continue to bring together synergy and the universe, ” said Ed Evans, CEO of the Tampa, Fla., company. “We are no longer serving just the telecommunications market,” Evans said.
Most recently the company has been best known for providing local number portability tools to five of the top six wireless carriers in the United States.
Now the company wants to broaden its focus and its brand to include data services such as roaming between Wi-Fi wireless LANs and wide area networks, and various messaging services such as SMS (short message service).
“There are areas were working on that could be applicable to the enterprise space,” said Michael OBrien, vice president of marketing at Syniverse.

The company also wants to focus on international markets such as Latin America, which was another reason for the name change, OBrien said. The former name included only English words. The new name isnt a real word in any language, which makes the company seem less biased toward English-speaking customers.
