Dell Computer Corp. saw revenues and income jump in the third quarter, and officials with the computer maker said they expect to see similar results for the fourth quarter.

In the quarter ended Nov. 1, the Round Rock, Texas, company generated revenues of more than $9.1 billion, a 22 percent increase over the $7.4 billion during the same period a year ago.

Net income came in at $561 million, a 31 percent jump over the $429 million in the third quarter 2002.

Dell Chief Financial Officer Jim Schneider said in a conference call Thursday afternoon that storage, servers and services continue to drive the business. For example, sales of external storage grew 73 percent, and in the first year of Dells partnership with storage giant EMC Corp., more than 1,500 customers bought storage systems from the duo.

Schneider and Kevin Rollins, president and chief operating officer, said the company is optimistic about areas it is beginning to branch out into–particularly printers and PDAs–but added that it will be a few years before they contribute significantly to Dells bottom line.

Schneider said the company in the fourth quarter expects revenues to increase 20 percent over the same time last year, to almost $9.7 billion.
