Switching AI chatbots could soon feel less like starting over.
Google is reportedly testing a new Gemini feature that may let users import past conversations from ChatGPT and other AI tools, preserving context, preferences, and ongoing projects. Instead of starting from scratch, Gemini could pick up those conversations where they left off.
According to TestingCatalog, Google is working on a beta tool called “Import AI chats,” designed to let users upload conversations from other AI platforms and continue them inside Gemini without losing context. The feature appears aimed at users who have spent months or even years building detailed chat histories, preferences, and ongoing projects elsewhere.
Based on TestingCatalog’s findings, the import option is expected to live inside Gemini’s attachment menu. Users would first export their conversations from another AI service, then upload that file directly into Gemini.
Once imported, those chats would be stored in the user’s Gemini activity, allowing the assistant to reference past context in future responses. That simplicity may also be intentional. Rather than guiding users through a lengthy migration process, Google seems to treat chat imports as just another file upload.
Data privacy comes with tradeoffs
There is an important catch: TestingCatalog reports that imported chats, along with any follow-up conversations, would be saved to Gemini activity and used to help train Google’s AI models.
That makes data awareness a key part of the decision. Users moving sensitive or deeply personal conversations may want to review and trim their exports before uploading them. While Gemini already offers activity controls, the import feature adds another layer of data to think about.
More Gemini features spotted
The same TestingCatalog report points to other Gemini updates currently in development. One is a new “Likeness” setting that links to a Video Verification page, hinting at future tools related to identifying or authenticating video content. Details remain limited, and the feature appears to be in an early stage.
Gemini’s image tools are also getting attention. Google is testing higher-resolution image downloads, including 2K and 4K options, with the highest setting described as suitable for print. That could make Gemini more appealing for creators who want to use AI-generated images beyond the screen.
Google has not officially announced the Import AI Chats feature or shared a release timeline. TestingCatalog describes it as a beta feature, meaning it could change before a public rollout. The presence of these features suggests Google is moving fast to lure users away from its competitors.
